Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), following his recent arrest and detention.
The bail comes after mounting public interest and internal party agitation over the circumstances surrounding his detention, which had remained unclear for days. Sources close to EOCO confirm that Wontumi was released late Wednesday afternoon after initial questioning and procedural processing.
His legal team, reportedly in contact with senior government and party officials—including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia—has expressed relief at the development, while still demanding clarity on the nature of the allegations.
The news of his release has been met with excitement among grassroots NPP supporters in the Ashanti Region, who had been calling for transparency and fairness.
This latest development comes on the heels of strong public statements from both Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia, who urged the party to remain united and called on authorities to uphold due process.
Chairman Wontumi is expected to speak publicly in the coming days, as the party prepares to convene a high-level meeting in Kumasi to discuss recent events and their implications for internal cohesion ahead of the 2024 general elections.
