Bawumia Secures Sureties for Chairman Wontumi’s Bail – Aide Confirms

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has successfully arranged all the necessary sureties required for the release of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

This was confirmed on Friday by Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, a close aide to the Vice President. According to Khomeini, the relevant bail documentation has been duly submitted and is now pending verification by the authorities.

“If the verification of the sureties is completed today, the Chairman will be released,” Khomeini stated.

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail earlier this week to the tune of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified. The conditions, however, have sparked significant political backlash. Senior members of the NPP and Minority MPs in Parliament have described the bail terms as excessive and politically motivated.

Earlier this week, tensions escalated as a group of NPP lawmakers staged a sit-in protest at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), demanding the immediate release of their colleague. The development has further intensified political discourse surrounding the circumstances of Wontumi’s arrest and prosecution.

Chairman Wontumi was invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following investigations into alleged unauthorized mining activities. He has denied all allegations.

This is a developing story. More updates will follow as verification of the sureties’ progress.
