The long-abandoned Amakom Children’s Park in Kumasi has finally been cordoned off to pave way for its long-overdue reconstruction, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the once-vibrant recreational facility.
What was once a joyful playground for children had, in recent years, turned into a shadow of itself — overrun by weeds, turned into a hideout for criminals, and used as a dangerous shortcut by pedestrians. The neglect not only robbed children of a safe place to play but also posed serious security concerns for residents in and around Amakom.
Recent developments at the site show that authorities have fenced off the park, and early preparatory works are underway, signaling a firm commitment to restore the space to its intended purpose. Construction materials have also been spotted on-site, raising hopes of a timely and effective reconstruction process.
Residents, who have long advocated for the park's redevelopment, have expressed relief and cautious optimism.
“It’s about time. This place had become a hotspot for criminal activity,” said a resident. “We are hopeful that the new park will be safe, child-friendly, and maintained properly.”
Urban development advocates say the park’s restoration is a much-needed step to improve communal recreation in Kumasi, and they are calling for features such as secure play equipment, adequate lighting, green spaces, and regular maintenance schedules.
While an official statement from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is still pending, expectations are high that the Amakom Children’s Park will soon be transformed from a symbol of neglect into a vibrant, secure, and accessible recreational hub for families across the city.
