Ghana Confirms 10 New Mpox Cases, Total Now 19

Accra, May 28, 2025 — Health authorities in Ghana have confirmed 10 new cases of mpox, raising the country’s total number of confirmed infections to 19. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) disclosed the development as part of its ongoing national surveillance efforts.

According to officials, the newly confirmed cases have been detected across multiple regions, including Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Western. Most patients are said to be in stable condition and are receiving care in isolation, while contact tracing and community-based monitoring are underway.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral zoonotic disease that presents with symptoms such as fever, skin rashes, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches. While it is generally self-limiting, severe cases can occur, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

The GHS has assured the public that it is actively implementing its emergency response plan. This includes heightened disease surveillance, enhanced screening at points of entry, increased public education, and preparedness activities in health facilities across the country.

Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, urged the public to remain calm but vigilant. “We encourage anyone who develops symptoms suggestive of mpox to report immediately to the nearest health facility for assessment and care,” he said.

Ghana’s Ministry of Health has also reminded the public to adhere to personal hygiene protocols and to avoid close contact with individuals showing signs of rash illness.

Health experts warn that although the current outbreak remains manageable, swift and coordinated action is key to preventing wider transmission.

This is the second major mpox outbreak Ghana has experienced in recent years. The country confirmed its first cases in 2022 amid a wider global resurgence of the disease.
